Wine from Portugal is increasingly securing its place in the world. We are most familiar with the dessert wines such as port wine or Madeira wine. But there are so many wonderful table wines that are white, pink, and red worthy of attention too.

Even the Portuguese increasingly appreciate their homegrown sparkling wines. It’s no surprise that we think they are ready to take their place alongside other famous sparklers.

Portuguese Wine Grapes

We thought it would be fun to explore wines from Portugal and give you some ideas of what you’ll discover.

Disclaimer: We have received samples of some of the products below from Wines of Portugal and Repour. However, our opinions are honest and are strictly our own based on our personal experiences.

Setubal, Portugal

Portuguese Wine Regions

Portugal is a rather small country physically, about the size of the U.S. state of Indiana. But its shape is more like California. Stretching along the Atlantic coastline, Portugal has several distinct wine-growing regions. Each has its own unique weather, soil composition, and all the things that impact wine.

Porto, the northern part of the country boasts its sweet, fortified, dessert wines. Port wine has a reputation as some of the finest around the world. Vinho Verde is also north, and known for the citrusy white wines with a tiny bit of sparkle of the same name. The Douro, home to the spectacular river, produces fantastic table wines, particularly some rich and ripe reds. Lisbon and Tejo produce some of our favorites with Chardonnay and Syrah among many whites and reds. And, of course, Madeira wine makes the perfect way to end a meal whether on the island or at home in the states.

There are several other growing areas in Portugal, so it’s easy to see that wines from Portugal offer many different ways to explore the country’s culinary paths. We’ll create a model tasting for you to give you some ideas. While we provide you with a few examples of Portuguese wines that we enjoy, we hope you use them as an introduction to further explore many more wines from Portugal on your own.

Vinho Verde in Portugal
Vinho Verde in Portugal

White Wines From Portugal

We’ll begin our virtual tasting with white wines. Portugal’s wine grape varieties include some 250 different grapes. As you can imagine, that makes for a lot of opportunities from single grapes to wonderful blends. That includes some of our favorite whites in the world.

Alvarinho

Alvarinho is a white grape that offers a citrusy flavor with plenty of crisp minerality. Commonly grown in the north, its increasing popularity is spreading southward as well. There are full-bodied dry wines made from single grape as well as blends. Poema and Alaveda Alvarhino wines are solid performers that will give you a taste of this special grape at a reasonable price.

Gazela Vinho Verde

Vinho Verde

We must confess that Vinho Verde is our go-to wine in the spring and summer. Increasingly, it’s finding its way onto our table all year round. While Vinho Verde comes in several styles, our favorite has some slight evanescence making it a light version of sparkling wine, dry and minerally, pairing with a summer salad, roasted meat, or grilled vegetables equally well. You may find several brands at your local wine retailer. One that we have found easily almost everywhere are the Gazela and Nobilis brands. They’re inexpensive and refreshing every time.

Pink Wines From Portugal

We’ve become big fans of pink wines, sometimes called rosé, lately. They can offer a little more heft than white wines without the heavy lifting offered by reds. For us, they are the perfect choice when we want something in-between for meals including turkey, pork, duck,  salmon, or hearty vegetarian fare.

Mateus Dry Rose

Fortunately, you don’t have to look too far for great pink options. There are quite a few in the Vinho Verde realm such as from Casal Garcia, Broadbent, and even Gazela. But that’s not the only game in town. Ever heard of Lancers (yes, the funny shaped bottle) or Mateus rosé? These classic easy drinkers are also wines from Portugal. JP Azeitao has a Syrah rosé and Roquevale Ossa offers a rosé from Alentejo. There are lots of options to try ranging from sweetish to bone dry.

Red Wines From Portugal

Lovers of red wine rejoice! The power of Portuguese wine shines in the spectacular array of glorious reds found throughout the country’s many wine-growing regions.

Red wines from Portugal may have grape names that you’ve not heard of before. That’s a good thing! You won’t find many of Portugal’s native varieties elsewhere and they have become attuned to the landscape, making for exciting new flavors to explore. Many of the tastiest red wines come from curated blends that integrate the various qualities of the grapes into luscious combinations. Here are some special red wines we like.

Quina da Ponte Pedrinha Reserva

Quinta Da Ponte Pedrinha, Reserva

This rich, bold, dense red comes from the designated growing area of the Dão. The Quinta in the name refers to the fact that this blend is from a wine farm, commonly identified on the label of wines from Portugal. This is a great example of a versatile red table wine you might enjoy with a hearty steak or grilled meats, along the way of a Cabernet Sauvignon. It incorporates into its blend the Touriga Nacional, one of Portugal’s finest red grapes.

Herdade das Servas 1_Oak Barrel

Herdade Das Servas Sem Barrica, Unoaked

The Alentejo region is gaining more attention for its clear, intense, and full-bodied wines. Lovers of black fruit, plum, and cherry will enjoy this soulful rendition of red wine perfect for red meats, game, strong-flavored cheeses, and Portuguese flavors like pork and sausages. We love the lack of oakiness, which allows the natural complexities of the grapes to shine through.

Vinha do Cais da Ribeira Douro

Vinha do Cais da Ribeira

Writing about Portuguese wine without mentioning one from the Douro would be a mistake. Delicious and reasonably priced, Vinha da Cais da Ribeira is also just plain fun to drink. It’s fruity and toasty, soft and fresh. This is also a wine that you can drink with whatever you like. For example, meat, fish, and vegetables on the grill or roasted in the oven.

Sparkling Wines From Portugal

Italian Prosecco, Spanish Cava, and French Champagne are enjoyed around the world. But be on the lookout for Bairrada Espumante, Portugal’s best-kept secret in sparkling wine. While fabulous fizz is produced in other parts of the country as well, such as Minho, Setúbal, and Dão regions, Bairrada is the Champagne of Portugal – at least for now.

Messias Espumante Blanc de Blancs

But don’t expect the secret delights of Portuguese fizz to stay hidden for long. In fact, while other Portuguese wines have been recognized for decades, Portuguese sparkling is starting to make its mark too. There are tasty Blanc de Blancs from respected family vineyards such as Messias. And fizzes such as Marquês de Marialva Cuvée, and Ariela de Bernard Magrez Bruto have won honors for Portugal at the Effervescent du Monde in France. It’s the largest competition of sparkling wines in the world!

Dessert Wines From Portugal

Many of us like to finish a great meal, pair a dessert, or have a little nightcap with sweet fortified wine. Portugal offers two of the world’s finest finishing drinks, Port wine, and Madeira wine.

Porto, Portugal
Porto, Portugal

Port Wine

One could easily argue that Port wine is the king of dessert wines. It is only produced in the Douro region. But all port wine is not created equal. Different ports have a range of sweetness. Ruby port, so named for its color is young and aged in wooden barrels with little oxidation. Tawny port is aged in wine seasoned casks, giving it some oxidation but not the oaky flavor. Port can be aged for decades, some are as much as 40 years old. As you can imagine, the price goes up as time goes on for many of these beauties.

Sandeman LBV Port

Port combines a grape spirit, most likely brandy, with wine. The alcohol of the spirit stops the wine from fermenting, creating the “fortified,” sweet and mellow flavor of the port. Famous brands include Sandeman, Graham’s, Dow’s, Taylor’s, Cockburn’s, and  Warre’s.

Madeira Wine
Madeira Wine

Madeira Wine

For those who want something a little bit different, Madeira wine, made only on the Madeira Islands, offers another taste. It also has variations, ranging from dryer to sweet, so that on the dry side it can resemble a dry brandy or fine Cognac. The process is similar to the fortification of using spirit and wine, but the winemaker heats the wine at a high temperature for a long time. This heat exposure brings out a more complex flavor, and the oxidation causes the colors of Madeira wine to be more similar to tawny port or even brandy.

Blandy's 10 Year Old Special Dry Madeira

Barbeito, Blandy’s, Justino’s, and others all make fine Madeira wines. But to get the true impact of this liquid gold, we suggest you visit Madeira Island and enjoy some along with the many other wonderful things there are to do.

Enjoy Your Wine As Long As You Like

One of the things that bother us is that while we like a glass of wine with dinner, we don’t often drink more than one. And we don’t drink it every day. So we often will have bottles of wine with a couple of glasses out of them that don’t get fully drunk for some time. Maybe we waiver from red to white to pink or sparkling. We hate wasting wine, but let’s be honest, if you don’t feel like drinking, you don’t feel like drinking.

repour

That’s why we were excited when we heard about Repour. Repour is one of those SMH ideas that you wonder why nobody else thought of before. It’s really very simple. When you open a bottle that you don’t plan on finishing right away, replace the cork with the Repour stopper. When you activate it, a special packet inside the stopper pulls out the oxygen, the stuff that turns your wine nasty after a while. It does this until there’s no oxygen left. Then you can keep your regular 750ml bottle of wine fresh and ready to go for up to two months.

If you’re like us and you love the idea of being able to drink your wine and save it too, check out Repour. It’s one of those things that are so easy only a genius could have created it. Fortunately, even so, it’s a wallet-friendly solution to a vexing problem. And, it’s easy enough to use, that even we can’t mess it up.

So, why not get yourself a few bottles of amazing Wines of Portugal? And while you’re at it get some ideas for tastes from central Portugal. Maybe you’ll fall in love with it all as much as we have. We hope so!

This is one of those recipes you really donʼt want to tell anybody about until after theyʼve tasted them. We watched these get wolfed down many a time at parties while we also waved away requests for the ingredients until after they were all gone – usually within the first hour of those parties.

Here we provide a recipe that includes making the meatballs from scratch. But you could just as easily buy pre-made meatballs, or even use Vienna sausages (see our NOTE below). Trust us, it’s a crowd-pleasing recipe every time!

meatballs

Quick and Easy Cocktail Meatballs

1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
1/8 teaspoon pepper
1 egg
1/4 cup shortening (like Crisco)
1 bottle (12 oz.) chili sauce
1 jar (10 oz.) grape jelly (yes, really, grape jelly — thatʼs the secret!)

Directions

Cook meatballs in shortening in a 12-inch skillet until brown.
Remove meatballs from skillet; drain fat.

Here, we use the parmesan Folios Cheese Wrap as a stuffer and fill it with marinara and Italian spiced ground chicken. You can use rotisserie chicken, cooked chicken breast, or any other protein you like. Skip the breading – you won’t even notice it’s missing!

Asian BBQ Snack
Asian BBQ Snack

For lovers of fusion cuisine, here’s one for you. We used cheddar Folios Cheese Wraps cut into quarters and filled them with crispy Asian bbq pork belly. Of course, we had to amp it up a bit, so we caramelized some onions to add to the mix. You could easily use your favorite bbq sauce instead. Or, if you want to try something even meatier, cut smaller circles out of the wrap, heat to a crisp, and form small bowls. Fill the bowls with chili and top with bacon bits and cheese.

Crispy Duck

Crispy duck is one of those dishes that we love to order at a restaurant but didn’t know how to make at home – until now. Maple Leaf Farms has changed all that with their two-pack of ready-to-cook duck breasts and a fantastic tub of duck fat too. We learned how easy it is to make delicious and exciting dishes using these ingredients, and can’t wait to share some recipes and ideas with you.

Disclaimer: We received products to try from Maple Leaf Farms and those products were used in making these recipes. All opinions expressed are our own and based upon our experience with the products

Duck Breast

We used to think that the duck breast was something exotic and difficult to work within the kitchen. The fact is, we were just plain wrong. Maple Leaf Farms has two duck breasts in a sealed package, which offers a great size and doesn’t leak. You simply remove the breasts and go. It couldn’t be easier. The duck breasts are high quality and depending upon how hungry you are, you may consider splitting one with someone else and saving one for another recipe. We are eating less meat these days, so we cooked the breasts and made two different recipes using them for two different meals – both of which were incredible.

Mapleleaf Farms Duck Breast

Variety is the spice of life, so we want to share with you two totally different ways to use crispy duck breast to make a dinner meal and an anytime meal (we had this one for breakfast, but you can really enjoy it any time of day). We’ll also give you some ideas for how to use the incredible duck fat that Maple Leaf Farms has available for cooking some of the crispiest, tastiest food ever. You can use our recipes as jumping-off points too because you’ll discover just like we did that there is a lot you can do with duck breast once you start to let your mind get creative.

Crispy duck breast

Crispy Seared Duck Breast With Blueberry-Apple Balsamic Sauce

This recipe makes two duck breasts with a rich, delicious sweet-tangy fruit sauce.

Ingredients

2 duck breasts, including the skin on top
salt and pepper to taste
1 teaspoon marjoram
1/2 teaspoon hand-rubbed sage
1 Tablespoon duck fat
1 Granny Smith or another tart apple, chopped
1/2 onion, small diced
1/2 cup brown sugar, light or dark, packed
1/4 cup granulated sugar
1  cup frozen blueberries, thawed (you can use fresh if you have them)
1 clove garlic, minced
1/2 Tablespoon raspberry balsamic, white balsamic, or aged balsamic vinegar

Mapleleaf Duck Breast Dinner

Directions

If the duck breasts are frozen, be sure to let them thaw before cooking. Pat dry if they are wet. Then you’ll want to make the sauce first.

Sauce:

  1. Put 1 Tablespoon of duck fat into a medium saucepan and melt. If you don’t have separate duck fat, you can cook the duck breasts first and keep them warm while making the sauce. Use 1 Tablespoon of the duck fat rendered from cooking the duck breasts.
  2. Place diced onions into the saucepan with duck fat and heat until onions are clear.
  3. Add the chopped apple, blueberries, brown sugar, granulated sugar, and vinegar.
  4. Simmer until the ingredients come together and the sauce reduces and thickens slightly.
  5. Stir gently and, if preparing prior to cooking the breasts, remove from heat and rewarm if necessary prior to topping breasts.

Duck Breasts

  1. Heat oven to 400 degrees F.
  2. Heat dry ovenproof skillet on medium-high for 4 minutes.
  3. Score duck breasts in diagonal strips about 1/2 inch apart through skin and fat but not cutting the meat.
  4. Sprinkle duck breasts with salt, pepper, marjoram, and sage on both sides.
  5. When the skillet is hot, place duck breasts skin side down.
  6. Cook the duck breast until the skin is golden brown and crispy, and a good amount of the fat has rendered about 6-8 minutes.
  7. Then flip the breasts and brown the other side for another 2-3 minutes
  8. When both sides are seared, place the ovenproof pan on the middle shelf and cook for another 4-8 minutes, depending on the size of the breasts, in the oven until a thermometer inserted in the breasts reads 160 degrees F internal temperature.
  9. When the breasts are cooked, remove them from the oven and let rest for 3-5 minutes.
  10. Slice the breasts along the scored cuts about 1/2 and arrange on the plate.
  11. Top with a generous amount of sauce and garnish as you like.

Crispy Duck Hash

This is a “what you have and what you like” recipe. That means you can use whatever ingredients you have on hand and what you like to eat. We think things like root vegetables such as parsnips, carrots, rutabaga, turnips, and beets all work well. Then we like to add something green for color such as broccoli, peas, green beans, Brussels sprouts, chopped spinach or kale, asparagus, or sugar snap peas. Of course, we like some sort of potatoes whether gold, russet, sweet, or some of each and some chopped onions for flavor. These are the basic ingredients that are the building blocks of the hash.

Mapleleaf Farms Crispy Duck Hash

Ingredients

1 cooked duck breast, chopped. Use the instructions in the Crispy Seared Duck Breast recipe above to create a crispy skin
4 cups Vegetable medley using your choice and available options from the introduction to this hash recipe. Chop vegetables evenly so that they will cook at relatively the same rate.
4 large eggs
1 teaspoon hand-rubbed sage
1/2 teaspoon ground rosemary
1 teaspoon parsley flakes
2 tablespoons duck fat

Directions

  1. Place duck fat in a skillet on medium heat and melt.
  2. Add chopped vegetables and saute until cooked thoroughly. It’s okay if you let some of them brown, we like it that way!
  3. Once vegetables are almost done, add the chopped cooked duck breast.
  4. Combine the vegetables and duck breast to make sure the flavors blend and the duck breast is evenly incorporated.
  5. In a separate skillet, cook four eggs as you prefer them – fried, over easy, basted, sunnyside up, over medium, etc.
  6. When eggs are almost ready, divide hash onto two plates.
  7. Place two eggs on top of the hash.
  8. Salt and pepper eggs to your taste.
  9. Serve with warm crusty bread or toast of your choice

Crispy Duck Fat Fries

If you are lucky enough to have some duck fat, you will want to make some of the tastiest, crispiest fries around. It’s super simple to do, and we even make them in the toaster oven. Yes, it’s that easy!

Crispy duck fat fries

Ingredients

4 Russet or your favorite potatoes, cut into large juliennes for fries.
1 to 2 Tablespoons duck fat, melted
Salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, ground rosemary, or other spices to your taste

Directions

  1. Cut potatoes into fries. You can leave the skin on if you like or peel, it’s up to you.
  2. Place fries into a large bowl of COLD water. Let them soak for a couple of minutes, then dump the water and exchange for fresh COLD water. This is essential to make your fries super crispy.
  3. Let the fries soak for another 5 to 10 minutes, removing the starch from the fries.
  4. Pour water off and dry fries as much as you possibly can with paper or kitchen towels. Get them really dry – again, this makes for crispy fries.
  5. Completely dry out the bowl or use another dry clean bowl. Add the melted duck fat. You just want enough to coat, not to soak the fries.
  6. Coat the fries with the melted duck fat.
  7. Add spices of your choice. Hold off on the salt though, and add that after the fries have cooked, just before serving.
  8. Place fries on a baking sheet in a single layer. Cook on 450 for about 30 minutes, flipping over halfway through. Keep an eye on your fries. Ovens bake differently, so you want them to get golden brown but not burned. Check them every 5 minutes or so to make sure they’re on track and not getting burned.
  9. Place in serving dish or platter and sprinkle with salt to finish. You don’t need or want to overdo the seasoning with these fries. They have a lot of flavor all by themselves.

What Are Pasteli?

Sesame candies recipes are fun to make and even more fun to eat. Pasteli are a type of ancient sesame seed candy or energy bar from Greece. They are often found in a variety of forms all over the Mediterranean and the Middle East. We like to think of it as ancient Greek food for modern tastes.

Hard Or Chewy Pasteli

Some recipes add more sugar in the mix to make crispy candy-like sesame brittle. But personally, we love this slightly chewy version that gets a bit of additional flavor from the addition of pistachio nuts and a little citrus kick. We’re always looking for honey recipes and this one features the honey flavor brilliantly. It’s one of our favorite sesame seed recipes.

Greek Pasteli Honey Sesame seed candy

Pasteli are very easy to make so you can try this recipe whenever you have a few extra minutes. While the texture of these pasteli is on the chewier side, you can also make them crisper if you like by putting them in a cold fridge or freezer after you’ve cut them into pieces. However you figure it, these tasty Pasteli are full of energy and highly addictive. Keep the ingredients on hand because we’re sure that once you try them, you’ll be making them all the time.

Greek Pasteli Sesame candy with pistachios

Ingredients

1 cup of sesame seeds
1/2 cup of unsalted pistachios, halved
1/2 cup favorite honey
1 Tablespoon grated lemon or orange peel, your choice of flavor
1 teaspoon lemon or orange juice, your choice
1/4 cup of granulated sugar

Directions

1. In a skillet or saucepan, heat the sesame seeds slightly until light gold color over medium heat.
2. Remove seeds from heat once done and place them on a plate to stop them from cooking.
3. In a medium saucepan, add the honey, grated citrus peel, citrus juice, and sugar. If you like a little tang to cut the sweetness in honey recipes, go with the lemon. Otherwise, the orange adds a nice note without much tang.
4. Heat the mixture over medium until it begins to bubble, then turn down the heat to simmer and cook for about 5 minutes while stirring continually to keep it from burning.
5. When the mixture is heated and thoroughly combined, having boiled, take the pan off the heat, and stir in the toasted sesame seeds and pistachio halves. Blend them together well so that the nuts and seeds are evenly distributed into the honey mixture.

6. Pour the mixture onto a parchment-lined baking sheet and smooth to an even layer with a spatula. You can lightly coat the spatula with olive oil to keep the mixture from sticking to it.
7. Set the pan in a cool place for 30 minutes. If it has started to harden slightly, cut into bars, squares, or other desirable shapes, and then let set until chewier. If you want more like sesame brittle, place individually wrapped or separated pieces into the freezer for 4 hours or more to crisp.

Easy And Delicious
Easy And Delicious

This easy apple crisp recipe is so simple you can make it when you have about fifteen minutes to spend in the kitchen. Pop it in the oven to bake and in about an hour you’ll have a fabulous treat.

Which Apples?

Apples Are Delicious And Nutritious
Apples Are Delicious And Nutritious

You can choose the type of apples based on what you have on hand. But if you’re looking for what types of apples to use, we like tart apples like bright green Granny Smiths. Braeburn,  Cortland, Jonathan, McIntosh, Pink Lady, and others also tend to be varieties with a bit of tartness making them great for apple crisp.

Apple Crisp Topping

Rolled Oats For Apple Crisp Topping

The yummy, gooey, spicy apple filling is just the beginning. For sweet lovers, it’s all about the topping. This version combines the sweet goodness of brown sugar with the light crunch of quick-cooking oats. If you’re a fan of nuts, you can easily chop some up and add them to the basic topping. Pecans, walnuts, pistachios, and almonds all give some added protein and crunch.

Baked Chicken Parmesan is our healthier take on the classic Italian dish that we grew up loving. Old school recipes aren’t really the healthiest options when you look at how they’re typically prepared. The chicken is usually breaded and fried before the sauce and cheese go on top. So, let’s face it, traditional Chicken Parmesan is a fat bomb. But you can still get all the flavor without making yourself regret that you overindulged. Our simple Baked Chicken Parmesan recipe is out-of-this-world delicious without the need for breading and frying. It’s a little bit different, but we love it. And it fits right in without the guilt when you’re looking to lighten up a little without missing all the delicious flavor for dinner.

Easy Baked Chicken Parmesan Options For Busy Cooks

There are a few different ways you can go about making baked Chicken Parmesan our way. You can cook the chicken in a pan with some olive oil and garlic first. Then put the sauce and cheese on top and bake it until it’s all melty good. Or, you can put it in the oven and bake the chicken then add the sauce and at the very end, top with cheese and broil it. You can do this in a toaster oven too. And, finally, if you’re really looking for a quick tasty healthy meal, you can take already cooked skinless, boneless chicken breasts, put the sauce and cheese on top, then pop it in the microwave until everything is warm and the cheese has melted. It really is that easy. And best of all this chicken parm recipe goes great with veggies or a salad. And, if you want to splurge, just add a side of your favorite pasta, make it whole grain for a boost, and you’re good to go.

1 Cup of part-skim Mozzarella cheese

Preheat oven to 375 Fahrenheit.

  1. Rub each chicken breast with 1/2 Tablespoon of Extra Virgin Olive Oil
  2. Sprinkle each breast with garlic powder and half of the dried or fresh herbs
  3. Place on a baking sheet and bake for 15-20 minutes, or until breasts are fully cooked through
  4. While baking, mix the Parmesan and Mozzarella cheeses together
  5. Remove cooked breasts from oven and spoon marinara sauce over each breast
  6. Sprinkle the remaining herbs over the sauce on each breast
  7. Top each breast with the Mozzarella Parmesan mixture
  8. Bake for 10-15 minutes or until sauce is warmed through and cheese is melted

Note: If you find that your cheese is not getting bubbly and you’re afraid your chicken might be getting tough, use the broiler on your oven for a few minutes. Keep constant watch so that you do not burn the cheese.

Asian Chicken Salad, also called Chinese Chicken Salad, is one of our all-time favorite healthy salads.  You can make it with a variety of ingredients depending upon what you have on hand. We love healthy salads that can be enjoyed anytime. Because this is one of the most flexible chicken salad recipes, it has become one of the best salad ideas for dinner, especially when the summer heat is in full swing.

Asian Salad With Lots of Flavor

We enjoy the Asian salad dressing that gives this recipe lots of flavor while still remaining a healthy salad dressing. The key is combining unique Asian flavors from seasoned rice vinegar with some sesame oil. That way, we use less regular oil to keep the fat content low but still provide lots of zing to this Asian salad.

Our approach is to see what we have in our pantry and use that as the basis for our Asian salad. That keeps things interesting too because it will be different every time. Some of the salad ingredients give it a distinctively Asian twist such as crispy rice noodles and mandarin oranges. But you can substitute chow mein or ramen noodles, or even cook the noodles if you like. And, if you don’t have any noodles on hand, that’s okay too.

We Love Healthy Salads

Crunchy vegetables like carrots and cabbage can add crunch to our Asian chicken salad if you’re trying to stay away from carbs or are eating gluten-free. It’s also fun to add whatever other vegetables you have on hand to suit your taste. Cucumbers, tomatoes, sweet bell peppers, sugar snap or snow peas, bean sprouts, and more are all fantastic additions.

The important thing to remember is that this is your salad. If you like adding nuts for a little crunch, try some crushed peanuts or slivered almonds to top off your Asian chicken salad. You can even skip the chicken and use shrimp or just go all veggie instead. Sometimes we’ll use hard-boiled egg wedges for a bit of protein instead.

Just Have Fun!

Whatever you do, have fun. We love chicken salad recipes that give us choices, and this one is perfect for that. We’ll list the possible ingredients for you and then give you an idea of how to put it all together. We’ll also provide a very simple healthy salad dressing recipe. And, we’ll give you a few ideas for how to spruce things up a bit if you want to experiment or add some other flavors.

Asian Salad Dressing Ingredients

2 Tablespoon neutral flavor oil (extra light olive, macadamia, almond, walnut, etc.)
1/3 cup seasoned rice vinegar
1 Tablespoon grated ginger (you can use fresh or jarred, but powdered ginger does not provide the same flavor)
1 teaspoon honey
1/2 teaspoon toasted sesame oil

Directions

Combine all the salad ingredients and place into two serving dishes and arrange as you like. Some put the noodles on the bottom then layer lettuce, veggies, chicken, and nuts. Others prefer to combine chicken and veggies then top with noodles. Do whatever you like and make it your own! Also, you don’t have to include all of the salad ingredients. Just what you like and what you have on hand.

In a small bowl, combine the ingredients for the Asian salad dressing and whisk together. For a richer dressing, you can add 1/4 cup hoisin sauce or 1 Tablespoon of low sodium soy sauce or Tamari (gluten free).

Drizzle the dressing over the salads evenly. Top with your choice of cilantro sprigs, nut pieces, and sesame seeds.

Enjoy this tasty Asian Chicken Salad whenever refreshing and healthy salads sound like a good choice to you.

While 5-star hotels and dining are great, we love to travel in our comfy jeans and experience low-cost local delights as well. Whether you’re traveling domestically or around the world, there are plenty of ways to score great meals, eat well, explore fun activities, and have memorable experiences without breaking the bank.   Here we share a few of our favorite ideas for enjoying cheap and cheerful food travel. We hope you’ll share some of yours with us!

1. Reach out to the local tourism board.

Most of the tourism boards offer discounts and incentives for folks visiting their towns. Many even have coupon books that offer 2-for-1 deals and other great bargains. It’s a wonderful way to stretch your road trip food dollars. Don’t stop at just picking up brochures and pamphlets be sure to ask them for their own local favorites. You’ll be surprised at some of the local food spots that only real locals eat at. Get the daily special or ask what they are known for and you’ll get an earful of recommendations.

2. Go For A Top-Notch Breakfast.

Sometimes you’re on the run early and grab a bite on the go. No need to sacrifice, stop for a road trip meal that always satisfies. Breakfast! Breakfast buffets at hotels can often be pricey for a lot of food you won’t eat. When you can, it’s great to treat breakfast like a real meal. There are some amazing places to get a delicious hearty breakfast that won’t dent your wallet.

3. Find A Cooking Competition.

When you’re looking around for things to do, don’t forget to see if there are any local cooking competitions. From chili cook-offs, best burgers to bbq brawls to paella championships, local food fights are a great way to have fun and get some tasty food that’s filled with local flavor.

4. Try Tasting.

There are lots of places that pride themselves on their local brews and booze. If you like wine, beer, scotch, tequila, and other libations, try a tasting where you get to sample a variety of offerings for one lower price. You can also look for flights, where they give you the same opportunity. Sometimes there are even food flights so you can sample an array of local tastes without having to over-order. This tequila tasting included a variety that goes for $400 a bottle!

5. Be Flexible.

Leave some room in your schedule for happy surprises. You never know what you may encounter that will add to your memories without costing a dime. We were heading back from a trip and on the way home saw a sign that said “Alpaca Farm.” It was enough to get us to go down a small dirt side road to check it out. And what we found was one of the highlights of our trip.

Not only did we get up close and personal with our alpaca friends we also bought some alpaca socks and a tiny alpaca toy for my niece.

Be Flexible

6. Consider Low Season.

Some places have a definite high season and low season as far as visitors. The prices of accommodations and attractions can be substantially different even if the destination offers great opportunities in either one. If you’re heading to a destination that might be even more explorable when there are fewer crowds, think about taking advantage of the low season prices.

We went to Yellowstone in the winter and we just loved it. No crowds, and if you dress appropriately you can get close to nature and enjoy the peacefulness of being alone in the wilderness.

7. Unique Spots You Have To Try.

Sometimes there will be a stand or other spot that catches your eye because it is so unique or local that it catches your attention. Just go for it! You will enjoy sharing the stories about whatever you find there and if you find it amusing, chances are the locals do too.

We love to check out food trucks and food carts when we’re traveling too. Find the one with a long line and you’re bound to find a winner and eat well.

8. Enjoy The Local Specialties.

It’s easy to fall into the trap of thinking that prices for certain specialties are the same everywhere. But when the local specialty is in abundance somewhere, the prices tend to be much more reasonable. For instance, when we discovered that spiny lobster is readily available at a budget price in the Caribbean, we took advantage of it at every opportunity.

Delicious lobster at Lime Bar Eat Well

If you’re on the east coast you’re also bound to find great prices on lobster too. Find the spots that the locals go to and you’re bound to find good prices, good food, and good people.

9. Visit Local Markets and Bakeries.

They may offer samples and demos as well as tasty goodies that you can take with you if you like.  We love bringing bakery bread and baked goods from our trips.

Don’t forget about local farmers’ markets where you can often find homemade treats and local specialties.

10. Check Out The Attractions.

Sometimes it’s fun to act like a tourist. There are some destinations that give visitors special treatment by providing free entertainment and plenty to see and do while trying to coax you into their stores. In some urban environments around the world, these areas are also where the locals tend to congregate to take care of their daily lives.

If you pick them carefully, you might just find a cheerful combination that provides lots of fun. A local zip line or a tour of an unexpected museum or roadside attraction not only gets you off the beaten path you just might learn something new too.

These ideas, of course, are just the tip of the iceberg. We’d love to hear some of your ideas on how to enjoy cheap and cheerful food travel, so please share your thoughts in the comments!

Bonus Tip!

Bring your own snacks.

Whether you’re taking a foodie road trip or hopping on a quick plane ride having your own snacks is never a bad idea.

There are so many road trip foods that we love. We are sure to pack healthy, indulgent, salty, savory, and sweet foods for road trips. Our faves? Red vines and Mike & Ikes(for Diana), Berries from Haribo and Cheetos(for Sue), Cheezits, dark chocolate, fresh fruit, and nuts. And most anything we already have in our cupboard at home.

Don’t forget the road trip snacks for kids, too! It’s a great way to keep them quiet and happy. Just be sure to bring along their favorites.
